Original Crash Bandicoot voice actor Brendan O’Brien passes away at the age of 60

The voice actor for multiple characters in the original games of the Crash Bandicoot franchise, Brendan O’Brien, passed away on May 15, 2023, at the age of 60. The talented voice actor had given life to many characters in Naughty Dog’s Crash Bandicoot from 1996 to 2004.

Crash Bandicoot is a video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog initially as a PlayStation-exclusive game. However, in 2001, the franchise started transitioning to third-party platforms and became available on platforms other than the PlayStation. The first Crash Bandicoot game, in which Brendan O’Brien was a voice actor, followed the story of the orange-furry protagonist Crash. The story unfolds as Crash tries to foil his creator, Dr. Neo Cortex’s, plans for world dominance and also tries to save his girlfriend, Tawna.

Born on May 9, 1962, in Hollywood, California, O’Brian was the son of two great actors Edmond O’Brien and Olga San Juan. He started his career very early. When he was just 10 years old, he acted with his father in the pilot episode of the series “The Streets of San Francisco.” He gave voice to many iconic characters like Crash, Dr. Neo Cortex, Dr. Nitrus Brio, and Tiny Tiger in the first three Bandicoot games from 1996 to 2004. He took a break from the acting world in 2004 and later returned to cameo in many shows and movies.

On May 15, 2023, Brendan O’Brien’s obituary was posted on legacy.com and the official Twitter page for Crash Bandicoot also posted the news. Other than being a talented actor, Brendan was also a passionate guitarist and participated in multiple high school events. According to his obituary, O’Brian loved and cherished giving his voice for Crash and from 1996 through 2004, these were the “proudest moments of his life. The actor was also known to encourage fans to do well in their endeavors as he signed their memorabilia,” the memorial included.

Although the cause of his death has not been made public, it is a very sad day in the gaming community. Fans all around the world pray for him and his family through the rough time that they are going through.
