After Lewis Hamilton‘s shock move to Ferrari was announced for 2025, there have been a lot of rumors about who would get the much-coveted Mercedes seat. After all, even though the team has had a difficult start to the season, they are one of the top teams in Formula 1. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso is one of the top names that have come out to be in contention for the seat.

Ex-Renault engineer Pat Symonds believes that replacing Lewis Hamilton with two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso would be the best decision for Mercedes. The engineer believes that Alonso is still one of the top drivers of the grid and can be a brilliant short-term option to push the team forward.

Yeah, I'd put it on, I value the guy very much, I think he's incredibly fast. If I was looking for the best possible outcome for 2025 and to help me with my new 2026 car, Fernando is the man.
Pat Symonds said via Soymotor.com.

Symonds spoke strongly about how the Spaniard still has it in him to challenge for wins and podiums and would help Mercedes get on top of the 2026 technical regulations with his brilliant feedback. With Toto Wolff saying multiple times about how there’s plenty of time before Mercedes chooses a driver, only time will tell whether Alonso gets it.

Although recently, Former F1 Driver Marc Surer has warned teams about signing the two-time World Champion. Surer speaks about how from what it looks like, the Spaniard has lost a bit of speed due to his age.

As you get older, you simply lose speed. You can’t deny that, I think he’s lost a bit of speed, simply because of age. There’s nothing you can do about that, And of course that has an impact especially in the qualification. I think you’ll feel that more and more in the future. That’s why he’s no longer one of the absolute top drivers.
Marc Surer said.

Surer believes it is natural for 42-year-old to be losing speed due to his age. The ex-Formula 1 driver also backed this up by saying how Fernando Alonso hasn’t qualified on the front row of the grid this season. Fernando Alonso will definitely want to showcase his brilliance after Surer’s comments in a few weeks’ time during the race in Japan.
