In the last twenty years, that is, from the start of the millennium till now, Formula One has seen countless drivers come and go–but only a few talents have manage to etch their names in the history of the sport. For the fans of F1, Michael Schumacher‘s name has become synonymous with the word “legend” since the German is one of the most prolific racers of recent times. And then, there is Lewis Hamilton–a force to reckon with on the racetrack and off of it too. The Briton was Knighted by the then-Prince of England in 2021 for his enormous contribution to sports. And in the same rank as Michael and Lewis, there is Fernando Alonso.

Alonso had won two back to back F1 Championships quite early in his career in 2005 and 2006. That has been followed by an excruciatingly long drought. And in 2018, he had to see the exit from the pinnacle of motorsports due to a lack of a seat at any of the teams. But once out of F1, Fernando Alonso managed to achieve victory at the World Endurance Championship, the 24 Hours of Daytona and even the 24 Hours of Le Mans. And in 2020, he got back into F1 as an Alpine recruit.

While Nando’s Alpine days were dotted with a string of great top-10 finishes, once he shifted to Aston Martin at 41 years of age, the Asturian found real success once again. Currently, Alonso has four podium wins in the first five races of this year, and is in the top 3 in the World Championship. And former Renault F1 Team Principal Cyril Abiteboul is ecstatic over his results as he said, “He is probably the most complete driver on earth and it is a joy to see him at the top of Formula 1 again.”

While applauding Fernando Alonso for his success in F1, Abiteboul also mentioned another Spanish racer whom believes to be a brilliant force behind the wheels–Carlos Sainz. The 28-year-old had started his journey in Formula 1 as a Toro Rosso recruit, and he moved up to become a racer at Ferrari, the oldest and most successful team in the sport. Speaking of Carlos, Abiteboul said, “Carlos gives great attention to all details, particularly the mechanical part of the car, as if he were an engineer, and has helped improve the car since he was at Toro Rosso.”

In the upcoming days, Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso will be arriving in Barcelona for their home race–the Spanish Grand Prix. This year, Fernando Alonso has a high chance of winning the race in Spain as he has already gotten four top-3 finishes till now. It remains to be seen which Spaniard comes out on top of the other–Carlos in his Ferrari or Fernando in his Aston Martin.
