McLaren locked out the front row in Hungary for the third time ever as Lando Norris stuck the car on pole with Oscar Piastri following closely behind. Come race day, heading into turn one, the Aussie had a better launch and took the lead of the race. This initial lead then set the precedent for his maiden win, and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton applauded the Australian on his first victory in F1.
Oscar Piastri has been one of the most revered young talents in the motorsport world. Even well before his debut in the championship, the 23-year-old was being battled for by multiple teams. He then joined McLaren in 2023 and is in his sophomore year when he has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the paddock as he won the Hungarian GP while leading a 1-2 for the team.
While Lewis Hamilton completed his milestone of achieving 200 podiums in F1, he did not take away the spotlight from the race winner and praised him for the stellar work he has done.
Congratulations to Oscar[Piastri], he’s been doing a fantastic job. Ever since he got here to be honest. It was only a matter of time before he got a win. This is a great day for him. Really really happy for him and his family.Lewis Hamilton said in the post-race interview hosted by Nico Rosberg
Hamilton congratulated Piastri on his feat. He further claimed that he never doubted about the Aussie winning a race and reckoned it to be a matter of time before he would have won. Subsequently, this was achieved at the Hungarian GP, who commended him and his family for his win.
Lewis Hamilton claimed to be happy with the result of the Hungarian GP
On the other hand, the former world champion was ecstatic for him and his team. The 39-year-old is set to leave Mercedes at the end of the year and wanted the farewell to be a sweet one. Moreover, with a string of podiums, he seems happy about the progress that the team has made.
The Brit admitted that the race was a tough one for him, but despite that, he was able to make moves up the grid and secure another podium.
For us today, the team has done a great job to continue pushing the car. Ultimately we didn’t have the pace of the McLarens or the Red Bull. But we were just able to hold on at the beginning of the race, it was very very tough. And obviously the close battle we had at the end was a bit hair raising but, that’s motor racing. I’m really happy and grateful for the points. Big thank you to the team.Lewis Hamilton said in the post-race interview hosted by Nico Rosberg
Hamilton gambled on an undercut strategy and held the faster Red Bull of Max Verstappen behind. This battle went on for multiple laps which later saw the two titans collide amusingly. In spite of that, the 39-year-old was satisfied with the result and was happy for the squad.
On the contrary, despite McLaren claiming a 1-2, an awkward situation evolved at the sharp end. Lando Norris had to let through his teammate after a strategic scramble. This led to fans claiming that McLaren self-imposed themselves into an undesirable situation where they had to force one driver to let the other pass. Thus, a long debrief might go on behind closed doors at the English team’s motorhome.
