Mercedes dominated Formula 1 in the Turbo Hybrid era from 2014 to 2020. However, in recent years, things have taken a drastic turn for the Silver Arrows. The upcoming season could be a big test for team boss Toto Wolff‘s leadership.
The ground-effect era has not been kind to the Brackley-based team. Mercedes has struggled to fight at the front with Lewis Hamilton even deciding to leave the squad for Ferrari. This has forced Wolff to take a bet on 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli to partner George Russell.
Despite showing some promise in the latter half of 2024, Mercedes remained behind the likes of McLaren and Red Bull. Frustrations can grow back at Brackley if the Silver Arrows fail to show progress over the new few months.
Mercedes needs a strong first season without Lewis Hamilton
Mercedes has failed to match the top teams in the past couple of seasons. Hamilton even went winless in 2022 and 2023. The new regulations put the Silver Arrows on the backfoot, and the team has been trying to bounce back ever since.
The team did win a few races last season including Lewis Hamilton’s fairytale victory at Silverstone. Though, there were more bad moments than good. Toto Wolff now needs to get his team on the right track over the winter to ensure they can fight for wins once again.
Kimi Antonelli‘s arrival could bring some fresh energy into the team, as Russell takes the role of team leader. Wolff’s squad is now transitioning into the future without Hamilton, as such it is necessary to build a strong foundation before the new 2026 rules.
It is crucial for the squad to get everything in order this year for a strong charge in 2026. Moreover, the Silver Arrows would be determined to prove Lewis Hamilton wrong and beat Ferrari this year. Although, that might turn out to be an uphill task.
Certainly, Toto Wolff would be feeling the pressure heading into the upcoming season. The Austrian billionaire needs to lead from the front and ensure his team does not make past mistakes, particularly in terms of development. Fans would be waiting to see how things pan out for the Silver Arrows in the season opener in Melbourne.
