“You’re still under contract,” Ex-F1 champion claims Lewis Hamilton shouldn’t ‘fraternize with enemy’ Ferrari till he’s a Mercedes driver
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff might not be happy to see Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari garage as long as the 39-year-old is contracted to the Silver Arrows.

Lewis Hamilton shocked the sporting world by joining Ferrari in 2025. The seven-time world champion has achieved historic success with the Silver Arrows since joining the team over a decade ago. However, as Hamilton prepares himself for his switch to Maranello, ex-F1 champion Damon Hill claimed that Toto Wolff wouldn’t be happy by the Briton’s closeness to the Scuderia.
F1 journalist Tom Clarkson questioned Damon Hill if Lewis Hamilton would visit Ferrari in the paddock during the upcoming Emilia Romagna GP. Further, Clarkson wondered if Toto Wolff would ask Hamilton to bring some information from Mercedes’ arch-rival.
Do you think Toto will be saying: ‘Listen, you can go but you’ve got to bring something back in terms of information?Tom Clarkson asked Damon Hill on F1 nation podcast
Hill reckoned that Wolff wouldn’t be so thrilled to see the seven-time world champion at his future team’s motorhome. The former world champion believed that Toto Wolff might even give a stern warning to Lewis Hamilton. So much so, that Damon Hill reckoned that the Mercedes team boss could ask Hamilton to not ‘fraternize’ with the team’s enemy as long as he is under contract.
I don’t know. I can imagine Toto saying: ‘Well, you’re still under contract, mate. You shouldn’t be fraternizing with the enemy just yet.Damon Hill stated
Lewis Hamilton unsure how to navigate Ferrari switch
Lewis Hamilton decided to inform Mercedes about his Ferrari plans even before the start of the 2023 season. The Briton claimed that this allowed the Silver Arrows to find a suitable replacement in the coming months. This had been difficult for Toto Wolff when Hamilton’s arch-rival Nico Rosberg retired from F1 just days after winning the 2016 world championship.
However, there could be some awkward moments in the coming weeks. Lewis Hamilton remains unsure on how his transition to Maranello will be made. The Briton recalled when he had moved from McLaren to Mercedes for 2013. Lewis Hamilton claimed that he was not present in Brackley for the first seating in December 2012.
think it will start with a conversation with Toto because I don’t know how to navigate that.
I don’t think I was at Mercedes until December [2012], when the first seat fitting was made after the season. I’m not sure how I’m going to do it this time.Lewis Hamilton said, as reported by PlanetF1
Certainly, Lewis Hamilton’s move to the Scuderia will be one of the biggest changes in F1’s recent history. All eyes will be on the seven-time world champion’s new journey. However, it will be interesting to see how this transition takes place after the 2024 F1 season gets over in December.
