F1 Saudi Arabian GP: When and where to watch the second race of the F1 season?
Find out when to watch the 2023 F1 Saudi Arabian GP and its schedule, as well as the broadcasters where you can watch it.
Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen battle it out during the 2022 edition of the F1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix
The hotly-anticipated second race of the 2023 Formula 1 season, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, is this weekend. It’s held on the opposite end of the Arabian Peninsula from the Bahrain Grand Prix, which was the season opener. And in many ways, it’s kind of the opposite of the last race. While it’s also a night race in presumably dry conditions, it’s much faster. Tire degradation is not as much of a factor here.
It’s also a street circuit by the sea (of course, it’s still part of the desert), while the ‘Bahrain International Circuit’ as it’s called is a purpose-built racing track in the middle of the desert. The tire degradation factor, in particular, is a good sign for Ferrari. The Italian team struggled with it in Bahrain, as it had last season. Plus, the fact that the ‘Jeddah Corniche Circuit’ is faster, and mostly high to medium-speed corners means that the SF-23 has a better chance against the Red Bull RB-19.
Despite that, Red Bull and Max Verstappen are favorites in Jeddah. Charles Leclerc, who many would expect to be his closest challenger will be taking a 10-place grid penalty for the race. The brunt of the responsibility for Ferrari will move to Carlos Sainz’s shoulders – and it’s a good opportunity for him. Of course, another challenger to Red Bull’s dominance is potentially Aston Martin, particularly: Fernando Alonso. Mercedes, on the other hand, seem to be in a bit of a crisis right now.
Verstappen has also experienced a bit of a setback in the form of a stomach bug. So, he will arrive in Jeddah only on Friday. It’ll be interesting to see whether anyone at all can match him. But for Ferrari in particular, this circuit is good as any to start mounting a title challenge. After all, they hope to win the world championship in 2023. Red Bull vs Ferrari will be a key talking point throughout the weekend: And of course, whether Aston Martin can cement their title credentials. People will also be looking at how things at Mercedes are going.
