Former F1 driver Felipe Massa lodged a legal fight against Formula 1 and the FIA over the result of the 2008 world championship. The Brazilian argued that the sport was aware of the Crashgate scandal of that year’s Singapore GP, as such that race should’ve been removed from the standings and he should’ve won the title. Now, Massa has admitted that the lawsuit has become an expensive affair.
The Brazilian driver has assembled a team of legal experts to ensure that he receives compensation for not winning the 2008 world title. Although, Massa admitted that he never thought the lawsuit would become such a big part of his life.
Moreover, Felipe Massa confessed that the whole affair has become extremely expensive and he has had to shell out a lot of money to keep fighting. The former Ferrari driver asserted that he has been waiting for months and hopes to get justice in the coming months.
Felipe Massa claims 2008 Crashgate scandal ‘punished him big time’
During the 2008 Singapore GP, Renault’s Nelson Piquet Jr. rashed out. This brought in the Safety Car which helped his teammate Fernando Alonso‘s alternate strategy. The Spaniard then went on to win the race. In 2009, it was revealed that Piquet revealed that he was told to crash on purpose to help Alonso.
However, former F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone admitted that the sport had knowledge about this scandal during the 2008 season itself, but delayed taking action till the following year. Ultimately, it was Massa who lost the most from this scandal. As Lewis Hamilton‘s title victory in 2008 was facilitated by his performance in Marina Bay. Felipe Massa stated that this scandal had punished him immensely.
Certainly, Felipe Massa remains confidence in his legal battle. However, the Brazilian driver has lacked support from the majority of the grid. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Massa wins this case against the pinnacle of motorsport.
