The 2024 Austrian GP was one of the most thrilling races of the past few years. The battle at the sharp end made the race enthralling in the dying stages. However, the battle ended with Lando Norris and Max Verstappen colliding. To this, the podium sitters, George Russell, Carlos Sainz, and Oscar Piastri laughed as they inherited their grid positions.
Lando Norris found untapped performance in himself after his win in Miami. The Brit subsequently emerged as the lead contender to take the battle to Max Verstappen. This was witnessed in Austria, as the Dutchman had a slow stop which put him into the clutches of the McLaren driver. In a bid to save the home race victory for Red Bull, Verstappen equipped a dangerous defensive technique that resulted in a collision.
On the other hand, George Russell won the race, with Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz completing the podium places.
Russell: That was a really cool fight. Piastri: You did just win the race because of it.George Russell and Oscar Piastri said in the cooldown room
When the trio got the opportunity to see the incident themselves, they laughed at the clumsy crash. While Russell claimed it to be a cool fight, Piastri sarcastically replied by telling the Brit that the fight was the reason for his race win.
FIA claimed Max Verstappen to be guilty of the collision between him and Lando Norris
The incident left both drivers furious at each other. However, the collision was far away from a racing incident, and commentators felt the same. The incident was quickly investigated, and a judgment was made in the following laps.
FIA was quick to decide on the whole Verstappen-Norris clash.
The reigning champion had suffered a puncture which ruled him out of contention for the podium spots. However, his questionable defense was not overlooked, and the FIA’s judgment reckoned him to be the main fault bearer and punished him with a 10-second time penalty.
Despite the time penalty, the 26-year-old finished 16 seconds ahead of the car in P6. Thus, this penalty did not affect him and extended his lead in the championship. On the other hand, Norris DNFed out of the 71-lap event.
