Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, is showing no signs of slowing down. He’s been on a mighty run during the ongoing campaign and after Shanghai, Mercedes’ George Russell has taken the time to acknowledge him and Red Bull’s might!

Max Verstappen won yesterday’s 2024 Chinese Grand Prix by a margin of around 14 seconds. He was operating in a league of his own as the rest of the pack was tussling amongst each other to make up places.

George Russell managed a P6 finish at the event but seeing Verstappen’s might, he feels there is a long road ahead of Mercedes.

The fact is, Red Bull is still a long way ahead of everybody and I think it was probably only in the sprint race that we really saw their true potential [with] Verstappen pulling a second on everybody comfortably.
George Russell said in an interview with racingnews365

Red Bulls’ RB20 has proved too mighty just like their last year’s challenger. The Milton-Keynes-based team won 21 out of the 22 races last year and the way things are going, there is a very good chance that something similar could happen again.

George Russell deems his Shanghai P6 as a ‘fair result’

While George Russell has admitted that Mercedes has a lot of work to do in order to catch Red Bull, he has also made it known that he is somewhat pleased with his Chinese GP performance. As mentioned earlier, he managed a sixth-place finish at the event.

Russell ended his exploits behind the Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc!

I think P6 is a fair result and a fair representation of where we are as a team right now. It’s been a good weekend having this [sprint] format, to be able to try different things between the two races. Both races, the performance was very similar.

The ongoing campaign is five rounds down and the Toto Wolff-led Mercedes F1 team currently finds itself in fourth place with only 52 points to its name. Their direct rivals this year are McLaren and Ferrari and considering this, next month’s Miami Grand Prix will be an extremely crucial event for them in terms of the 2024 Constructors standings.
