McLaren driver Lando Norris has conveyed his thoughts regarding the team’s pace at the Mexican GP. Norris starts P3 in the upcoming 71-lap race after a vaguely powerless qualifying session against Ferrari and Red Bull.

Lando Norris has been in fine form this season, amassing 297 points so far in the drivers’ championship. He has started in pole position in four of the last five races this season. However, he has won in only two of his six total pole starts this year.

Norris has claimed that it would be difficult for him to match the Maranello-based team’s pace in Mexico. But the 24-year-old is reluctant to give up and will bring his A-game to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in the main race.

The last few weekends, they’ve [Ferrari] been extremely quick and quicker than us. So I don’t have the confidence to say, yes, we can just beat them on pace. Like today, not on their level. And they’ve been fastest for the last few weekends. So we’ll try our best. But I don’t think we have the pace compared to them at the moment.

Lando Norris told the media including motorsportweek

The Woking-based McLaren Formula 1 team leads the constructors’ championship by 48 points to third-placed Ferrari this season. The last few races will therefore witness a steep battle between the two teams who seek to clench silverware.

McLaren chief shares honest inputs regarding Lando Norris’ qualifying in Mexico

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella appeared displeased with Lando Norris’ pace in Q3 at the Mexican GP. Norris was three-tenths of a second slower than his teammate Carlos Sainz, who took pole position on Saturday.

But if we take the natural progression, then with Lando we might have been there. We have to say that the two laps in Q3 weren’t great. On the first one there were a couple of mistakes and this overheated the tyres and then the tyres were going away from Lando. In the second one again he wasn’t very clean but it was important to make sure he was decent enough to be there on the first or second row.

Andrea Stella said after the Mexican GP qualifying via Express

Andrea Stella claims that Norris was unable to manage the tire temperatures in the first lap of Q3 due to a few mistakes around the circuit. Stella further supplemented his statement by saying that the Brit was not fluent in the second lap as well.

Norris now remains to battle against Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen when the lights go out in Mexico City. He will aim to hold his position from the start and then make inroads into the chances of the cars starting ahead of him in the 71-lap race.
