The Canadian Grand Prix weekend is well underway with the FP1 and FP2 sessions done and dusted. Yesterday, the drivers had mixed outings around the Gilles Villeneuve circuit because of the rainy conditions but despite the challenges, Lewis Hamilton was quite pleased with his efforts.

Lewis Hamilton managed a strong fourth-place finish in the FP1 session, managing a time of 1.25.970 behind the lights of Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, and Lando Norris. In FP2, the Brit slipped down to seventh place in the standings.

However, despite having a bit of an up-and-down outing, Hamilton is pleased with the feeling he’s got from the W15 around the Montreal circuit.

I feel like I'm in fighting spirits. I feel like the car is reacting to my inputs, and as I said, I feel really confident out there. Saturday is often a different day for us, but I'm hoping tomorrow is a good day. But I think in either condition, I felt really strong today.

Looking at the reaction of the seven-time world champion, it is quite clear that he is in an upbeat mood going into the rest of the ongoing weekend. Hamilton is pleased with how the W15 is reacting to his commands around the tricky 4.361 km track.

George Russell also feels ‘confident’ around the Montreal circuit

While Hamilton is in a positive mood after Friday’s running, the same is the case with his Mercedes teammate, George Russell. The latter ended FP1 in P10 but was at the extreme north end of the grid in second place at the end of FP2.

Russell put in a time of 1.16.273 in the second session behind Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.

It was good fun out there today. First it was spitting, then it was drying, then it was raining again! The car was feeling good overall, but we will only learn about our position relative to others tomorrow. I had faith in the car today though and felt confident throughout.

After eight rounds of the 2024 F1 season, Mercedes is in dire need of some strong results. The outfit is currently in fourth place in the constructors’ standings and the gap to third-placed McLaren is of 88 points. The upcoming qualifying session in Montreal holds the key for the Toto Wolff-led team to have a memorable outing during tomorrow’s 70-lap race.
