Lewis Hamilton announced he would join Ferrari in 2025, leaving Mercedes after a decade with the team. The Briton has won six world championships and multiple Grands Prix with Mercedes. Like many drivers, Hamilton dreamed of driving for Ferrari at least once in his career.
As he approached retirement age, Hamilton didn’t want to miss the chance to drive for the legendary team. However, the Briton admitted he was nervous about telling Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff about his decision to move to Ferrari.
After signing with Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton described the experience as an emotional rollercoaster. He explained that while it was exciting to sign the contract, it was not easy to give the news to his Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. Hamilton admitted it was especially difficult and even terrifying because he had been with Mercedes for so long. Wolff later stated that he didn’t feel betrayed by the Briton’s switch to Ferrari.
Ferrari is one of the most successful and iconic teams in Formula 1. The team has won the Constructors’ Championship 16 times and the Drivers’ Championship on numerous occasions. Legendary drivers like Michael Schumacher, Niki Lauda, and Kimi Raikkonen have significantly contributed to its success. Hamilton also wanted to experience the thrill of driving for such a prestigious team, enhancing his already impressive legacy in Formula 1.

“One day. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do to the level that I do it today with that. […] There will be a time and a place for it, and I can’t wait for that part. But right now I have some work to do.”
