As the 2024 season has progressed, McLaren has poised itself as a contender for both constructors and drivers’ championships. However, Oscar Piastri has often been observed snubbing away points from Lando Norris, a challenger for the driver’s title. This led F1 pundit Martin Brundle to claim that the Aussie was not interested in helping the Brit in his championship fight with Max Verstappen.
Lando Norris joined McLaren in 2019 and inherited the leadership role since Carlos Sainz‘s departure. The 24-year-old stayed faithful to the team despite its struggles. However, as McLaren has now produced a championship-winning car, his biggest hurdle is understood to be his teammate Oscar Piastri. The Aussie has been fighting the Brit tooth-and-nail to snatch away wins and podiums.
Moreover, this was witnessed at the Italian GP when the 23-year-old overtook Norris on the first lap, compromising the latter’s racing line which ultimately helped Charles Leclerc to sneak ahead.
Piastri clearly has no interest in Norris’ World Championship chances against Max Verstappen, which we’d already witnessed in Hungary when he firmly seized the lead in the first corner. The racer in me admires this attitude. That’s why Piastri won championships and ended up in a race-winning F1 car.Martin Brundle wrote in his column on Sky F1
Subsequently, Martin Brundle asserted that Piastri depicts no interest in helping his senior teammate in the championship. He then explained that the Aussie has a racer’s mindset and wants to compete for everything he can in his F1 career.
Martin Brundle applauded Ferrari for pulling off a masterclass at Monza
On the other hand, the track was resurfaced at Monza to improve the racing spectacle this season. The intended goal was achieved as Leclerc pulled off a brilliant drive that helped Ferrari to win in front of its home fans. Moreover, this win came after a strategic masterclass as McLaren found itself tangled in the intricacies of a two-stop strategy.
The 65-year-old reflected on how the prancing horses conquered Monza courtesy of the Monegasque.
Ferrari had played a blinder with one-stopping, and Leclerc, despite his clear reservations, had brilliantly delivered as required. It wasn't a unique strategy, nine of the 19 finishers one-stopped, but it was the right decision on the day providing the car and driver could make it work. They rolled the dice and won.Martin Brundle wrote in his column on Sky F1
Brundle claimed that Ferrari played a blinder by going onto a one-stop. Furthermore, he stated that the Scuderia gambled with the strategy and it luckily paid off. They were able to hold off the faster papayas to win the home race.
Apart from this, Red Bull would be looking to resolve the RB20’s problems as McLaren is all set to pass them in the constructor’s standings in Azerbaijan. So the engineers in Milton Keynes would have to find a quick solution for the undrivable monster that RB20 has become in the last few races.
