Red Bull and McLaren have been in a close fight for the 2024 constructor’s title. This has led to fans alleging that the teams might sabotage each other to have the upper hand in the standings. Subsequently, an incident was witnessed during the qualifying for the Italian GP as Oscar Piastri was released into the way of Max Verstappen during Q1, which left the Dutchman agitated.
McLaren has been closing up on Red Bull’s championship lead rapidly. Heading into the Italian GP weekend, only 30 points separate the two title contenders. On the other hand, qualifying at Monza is often known for drivers tripping over each other while trying to get a banker-lap on the board.
However, the incident between Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen happened in the pitlane. It seemed like McLaren’s engineer did not spot the reigning champion driving down the pit road and gave the signal to the Aussie to come out of the garage.
**** ****! mate, we almost crashed!Max Verstappen said over the radio
Consequently, the 23-year-old emerged in the way of Verstappen. The Dutchman then had to take avoiding action by steering away from the papaya car. This left him infuriated as he claimed that they both almost crashed in the pitlane which could have resulted in both the car’s session ending earlier than anticipated.
Will Oscar Piastri receive a grid penalty for his incident with Max Verstappen?
Though drivers coming together in the pitlane happens rarely, the FIA is stringent on drivers and teams for not being considerate of other teams on the pit road. Subsequently, Piastri’s incident raged the debate for how the Aussie would be punished for his antics.
David Croft revealed on the Sky F1 broadcast that a driver getting in the way of another car in the pitlane usually occurs due to a race engineer’s decision.
Moreover, an unsafe release during a qualifying session is penalized by fining the team. Thus, even if FIA finds the No.81 Papaya at fault, they would penalize the Zak Brown-led McLaren instead of the driver.
Apart from this, Verstappen also later had an incident with Carlos Sainz within the pitlane during Q3. So, the reigning champion seems to be attracting misfortune on a weekend when Red Bull really needs him to perform to the best of his abilities.
