Alex Albon’s Red Bull transfer rumors are reportedly just a play to get Mercedes’ attention after Lewis Hamilton’s exit

Ever since losing the Red Bull seat to Sergio Perez, Alex Albon's F1 career has not seen him drive a racecar that is competitive enough to be worthy of a Championship.

Lewis Hamilton’s transfer from Mercedes to Ferrari after 11 years with the team has come as a surprise to everyone. But this has reminded several people who are die-hard F1 fans, the times when Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher had left their existing teams to switch to another squad. All of these multiple World Championship holders have commended huge salaries from prominent teams during their eras in the sport.

When Vettel left his seat at Aston Martin to retire from Formula 1, he had set off a chain reaction which saw Fernando Alonso move to his spot and Pierre Gasly shift to Alonso’s seat at Alpine. Similarly, Michael Schumacher’s switch from being a forever-famous Ferrari racer to a Mercedes racer when he made his F1 comeback was a much-discussed topic. Now, Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari switch is also being considered to be the starting point of major shifts in the F1 drivers’ line-up.

In the wake of Hamiton’s Scuderia news, there have been some rumors claiming Alex Albon and Red Bull are in talks. But FIA-accredited PlanetF1 editor/journalist Thomas Maher has claimed those reports are all bluff since Albon’s team created them so that Mercedes get interested to replace Ferrari-bound Hamilton with him in 2025.

Red Bull aren’t currently making a play for Alex Albon, contrary to rumours swirling atm. Interestingly, a source has suggested the news could be a play from Albon’s camp to gain Mercedes attention.

Alex Albon has performed brilliantly in his 2 years at Williams ever since F1 comeback

Williams racer Alex Albon has seen some incredible highs and also some great lows in his F1 career. He had to sit the 2021 season out since Red Bull dropped him in favor of Sergio Perez. He returned two years ago to take up Nicholas Latifi’s spot at Williams and has performed brilliantly for the team. He has already improved a lot from scoring only 4 points in his debut season with Williams to a whopping 27 points in 2023.

Alex Albon had entered Formula 1 during his rookie season in 2019 alongside George Russell and Lando Norris. Albon had been the second-runner up in the FIA F2 2018 season behind both Norris and Russell, but he had landed the most coveted seat amongst the three youngsters. Thus, Albon lapped up the opportunity to partner Max Verstappen in the 2020 and 2021 season, but seeing his results, Red Bull decided not to renew his contract.

Alex Albon has impressed everyone with his performance at Williams, and there have been rumors that his display of talent has reignited Red Bull’s interest in him. But it remains to be seen if the Austrian team is interested enough in the young racer to place a contract offer on the table for the Thai-British driver to take up or if they decide their line-up consisting of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez is perfect for the upcoming seasons.
