‘Another five years,’ Toto Wolff hints at Lewis Hamilton’s future in Formula 1
Lewis Hamilton, Toto Wolff
Lewis Hamilton joined Toto Wolff’s Mercedes at the start of 2013 ever since then he has been part of the team as a core member. Hamilton changed the look for the silver arrows in terms of their achievements throughout his era. Mercedes has been undefeated in the last eight years, due in no small part to Lewis Hamilton.
Toto Wolff, CEO and Team Principal of Mercedes-AMG F1 opened up with the talks of Lewis’ future contract. Lewis has a contract till the end of the 2023 season. With the driver turning 40 in a few years, it is much more difficult for him to continue and keep himself in the sport with more young talents waiting for the opportunity.
The Austrian said: “Just last week we sat down and he says ālook, I have another five years in me, how do you see that?ā Over time we have just grown together. We are totally transparent with each other. Lewis will be the first one to say āI canāt do this anymore ā because I feel I havenāt got the reactions anymore, or Iāve just lost fun doing it and there is another generation growing up that is just very strong.”
Toto Wolff’s thought about a long-term George Russell contract
George Russell started his Mercedes career in a very difficult car. However, George still managed seven podiums to his name and is even in contention for the second spot in the championship. He is way ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the table and is probably one of the best drivers to drive every race week.
Toto Wolff appreciates George’s form, āGeorge has been great joining the team. Heās a good personality, he acts with integrity, heās very transparent working with Lewis ā these two really have added to the teamās development slope this year, ” said Toto.
Wolff is also very sure about having Russell on the team for a long time to come: āThat time is going to come ā he will win races, he will race for championships and I think he absolutely has it in him. I feel very good to have him in the team over the long term.”
Mercedes are currently not much behind Ferrari with a much slower car to fight for the same. You can say they have made the maximum of their package. Though they still have their struggles, the Germans have come a long way from the start of the season. After 17 races off the chart, it still isn’t fair to say Mercedes are back on the top.
