“As was expected”: Redditors react to Max Verstappen’s first reprimand of the season for near-collision with Lando Norris at Japanese GP Qualifying
Max Verstappen
The upcoming Japanese Grand Prix 2022 is going to be a very important race for current Championship leader Max Verstappen as he can finally attain his second WDC title tomorrow at the Suzuka International Racing Circuit. Even the Team Advisor to Verstappen’s team, Helmut Marko, said that he wishes the Dutchman gets his second title in Japan, as that would be good for Red Bull‘s engine partner Honda, a Japanese manufacturer.
Thus, to secure his title victory in Japanese GP, Max Verstappen needs to try everything–even some questionable moves in the Qualifying, which could have led to a massive collision between him and Lando Norris. The near-crash caused a huge uproar amongst the fans who supported the McLaren racer’s stance that Max Verstappen should be penalised for obstructing his lap in Q3. But once the stewards went over the case following the end of the Qualifying, they let Verstappen off with a reprimand–his first in this entire season.
A formal reprimand in Formula 1 is a warning from the higher authorities in charge of ensuring safety in the sport. If a driver collects more than five reprimands, he will be liable to receive a grid penalty. Earlier, only three reprimands were allowed, but the number got increased to five forllowing a reform in 2022. But fans could not believe that the FIA let Max Verstappen walk out without a scratch after the serious incident with Lando Norris.

Redditors protest against the FIA’s casual dismissal of the incident involving Max Verstappen at Japanese GP Qualifying
Max Verstappen has a very high chance of winning his second World Championship title this year in the Japanese Grand Prix, and for that, he has to put everything on the line. He needs a race win and the single point for the fastest lap as well, to be declared the F1 2022 title holder. But when such a huge achievement is at stake, fans could not believe how Max Verstappen almost crashed into Lando Norris during the Q3 segment of the Japanese Grand Prix Qualifying.
While Lando Norris did say that Max Verstappen should be held accountable for his seemingly deliberate move to obstruct the Briton, the stewards did not penalise Max Verstappen. And that made the fans angry as they believe the FIA should treat all racers equally and the Championship leader should not enjoy any advantage when it comes to penalties.
Nevertheless, Verstappen got off with a reprimand, and he achieved pole position in Suzuka. Now, it remains to be seen if he becomes successful in making the World Championship his by the end of the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday.
