Fernando Alonso is adamant that Aston Martin will be a championship contender before Honda’s entry in 2026

Earlier this week, Aston Martin announced its works partnership with Honda for the 2026 season, when the new engine regulations will be introduced. This announcement occurred after the Japanese automaker parted ways with Red Bull at the end of 2025.

The Group CEO of Aston Martin Performance Technologies, Martin Whitmarsh, said, “It’s clear to us, and I think to Honda that the 2026 Formula 1 regulations will require the sort of full integration of chassis and power unit that only a full works team relationship delivers.” Suggesting that only a works partnership is the way forward if the team wants to compete for the world title.

Aston Martin’s performance so far has been astounding, with Fernando Alonso claiming four podiums in the first five races. However, the Spaniard believes they don’t have to wait until 2026 to contend for the world championship.

“Being a works team, there are only benefits, but that doesn’t mean that until 2026 Aston Martin will not have a chance to win the championship,” stated Alonso. According to the 41-year-old, the teams move to the factory in Silverstone, and the development of the new wind tunnel will also play a part in Aston Martin’s success.

Fernando Alonso’s longevity in racing is truly admirable. He started his racing career in 2001 with Minardi, and he’s showing no signs of stopping. He believes he will continue to race even after 2026 when the new regulations come to place, if he still feels motivated

“I don’t know what I will do in 2026. I will lie if I tell you that I know right now. For sure, I feel fresh, I feel motivated now, I feel sharp, still fast. If I keep enjoying, I will love to keep racing,” said the Aston Martin Driver.

The two-time world champion believes he will continue to race even after 2026 when the new regulations occur if he still feels motivated. “I know that one day I will wake up and I will not feel maybe motivated or happy to keep travelling and all these kind of things. Or maybe I don’t feel fast, and I will be the first to raise my hand and say, ‘Maybe it’s time’,” he added.
