Fernando Alonso made a shock move to Aston Martin after ending a heated second stint with his former team rebranded as Alpine. The move was sparked by Sebastian Vettel‘s retirement, which also caused Oscar Piastri’s spat with the French team.

Alonso had a surprisingly incredible stint with the Silverstone-based team, scoring eight podiums over the season, while his teammate Lance Stroll could manage none. The Spaniard helped Aston Martin secure fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, despite a dismal second half of 2023.

Team principal Mike Krack asserted that the team definitely wants Alonso to remain on the squad beyond the end of his contract, currently till the end of 2023. Krack commended Alonso’s teamwork, saying the team was “blown away” from the first day.

We were blown away from the first day. I think we have received a remarkable team player, constructive at all times, especially when it was difficult.
Krack said, as reported by formu1a.uno

Fernando Alonso is the oldest driver on the grid now at the age of 42 but has claimed that he still has the drive to win a third World Championship. With the team promising to make progress forward through the grid, Alonso could have a shot at the world title for the first time in over a decade.

Fernando Alonso is a two-time World Champion, winning the title consecutively in 2005 and 2006. Alonso has had three other chances to win the Championship but missed out by just a handful of points. The Spaniard has not won a single race since taking the trophy at his home Grand Prix in 2013.

Red Bull technical director Adrian Newey-designed cars gave Alonso a headache in 2010 and 2012, as Sebastian Vettel took the title in the last race on both occasions. Alonso asserted his respect for the British engineer, calling him a legend of the sport and the reason no other driver could win a championship in the past two decades.

He’s a legend of the sport. We've been very close, a few times, of working together. He is responsible. Yes, for 19 drivers for two decades, not to win a championship.
Fernando Alonso said, as reported by gpblock.com

Adrian Newey has designed 13 championship-winning cars from seven different drivers. After a career spanning 35 years, Newey is experiencing a period of domination never seen before, as the RB19 has won 20 of the 21 races held in 2023 right now, only beaten in Singapore.
