Aston Martin willing to keep Fernando Alonso in a non-racing role in the future

Aston Martin willing to keep Fernando Alonso in a non-racing role in the future

Fernando Alonso

At 41, Fernando Alonso continues to be one of the best drivers on the Formula 1 grid. He showed that in 2022 – even if circumstances (specifically, reliability) didn’t always help him. He is on at least a two-year deal with Aston Martin, which means he will remain in the sport from 2023 and 2024, and maybe past that as well. But he cannot continue forever.

Alonso is the most-tenured Formula 1 driver of all time, having overtaken Kimi Raikkonen this past season. Any team could use his experience and his knowledge and reading of the sport. Recently, in a press conference at the Aston Martin factory, team principal Mike Krack hinted that after his racing career, Alonso may continue with Aston Martin in a non-racing role.

As per PlanetF1, Krack said that the other roles Aston Martin are open to keep Alonso ‘can go beyond driving’: “Yeah, we have had some very good conversations already with him. This, in my opinion, can go beyond driving. Fernando is joining us as being a core part of the team, and we have to see how this is going to develop. But I think he can have a big role to play in the future of the team.” when quizzed if Alonso may stay in a ‘non-racing’ role, he added: “Yes, for example.”

Fernando Alonso open to a ‘role outside of the car’

Fernando Alonso has previously admitted that he is afraid of life after F1, and given that he dedicated his entire life to motorsport, he does not have a ‘Plan B’ – sitting around at home scares him. But he has indicated his willingness to stay involved in the sport, possibly with Aston Martin, even after his racing career has ended. In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, Alonso said of his future plans:

“…I don’t have forever. As long as there’s only a one percent chance of winning the title again, I’ll keep going. And if it doesn’t work out as a driver, then maybe in a role outside of the car. If we then become world champions, that would also give me satisfaction, because then I could say that I helped build it.” adding: “I am happy to start a new project and to make it successful as soon as possible.”

So, clearly, as indicated by both his own words and Mike Krack’s, Alonso is interested in staying at Aston Martin beyond his racing career, in a move that may resemble that of David Coulthard with Red Bull (DC had become a consultant after his career ended, and is still an ambassador for the team). While it will be a sad day when Alonso ends his racing days, by moving to a non-racing role, he can still stay involved with the sport.
