Lance Stroll is a driver that many in the paddock still label as a “pay driver”. A few years back, his father Lawrence Stroll got him a seat at Williams. Soon after, the billionaire businessman went on to purchase the drowning “Force India” team”. This meant that Lance secured a seat in a team owned majorly by his wealthy father. Since the rebranding to Aston Martin, the Canadian’s talent has been steadily questioned.

There wasn’t much talk about Lance Stroll last year as Sebastian Vettel’s heroics overshadowed the Canadian who seemed to perform good enough to avoid major criticism. However, his performances in the 2023 F1 season have been extremely disappointing according to some in the paddock. While Lance seems to be struggling, Fernando Alonso is thriving at Aston Martin. Nevertheless, Team boss Mile Krack has gone on to defend the Canadian racing driver.

In an interview, here is what Mike Krack had to say. “It is a shame we did not optimise the race for Lance, and the decision to remain on dry tyres in the early stages cost him a chance of scoring points. As a team, we need to do a much better job on that side of the garage,” he explained in Monza. “We have also had reliability issues, and it was always on that car. So it is something we need to do better,” he stated.

After getting a podium finish last weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has extended his gap to Lance Stroll in the standings by 121 points. The Spanish two time F1 world champion has also earned all the team’s podium finishes this season. Last weekend, strategy also played a supplementary role in Stroll’s bad results.

Aston Martin is defending Lance Stroll amidst immense calls for sacking the Canadian.  In the last few days, there have been rumors floating around that Lance Stroll is leaving Aston Martin and F1 after this season to pursue a career in Tennis. It has since been understood that Lance will be racing with Aston Martin in 2024. After a horrid first half, it will be interesting to see what the Canadian can do in the remaining half of the F1 calendar.
