Australia has given Formula 1 some great racers such as Mark Webber, Daniel Ricciardo, and the newest name in F1 town–Oscar Piastri. Piastri got his ticket to the pinnacle of motorsports by earning the coveted victory at the Formula 2 Championship in 2021. In 2022, he served as a reserve driver under Alpine, and then he took up the job of a regular driver beside Lando Norris at McLaren for this current year. To top it off, the Melbourne native got his first F1 points at his home race in Australia, and this drove Webber to comment on Piastri’s abilities.

After a successful stint at Red Bull for several years and with nine Grand Prix wins under his belt, Mark Webber is regarded as one of the most famous names in F1. In 2010, he came very close to getting a World Championship, but his teammate Sebastian Vettel had the last laugh after surpassing Mark Webber at the season finale. In 2013, the Australian finally retired from regular racing in F1, and then came Daniel Ricciardo from Perth. But still, Australia is waiting for their third F1 World Champion after Jack Brabham and Alan Jones–and Webber believes Oscar Piastri can do the job.

Being a national F1 legend, Mark Webber knows rookie Oscar Piastri has to go a long way before he can surpass Webber’s trophy count, but he believes the youngster has the talent to take on the task. Thus, he said on the F1 Nation podcast, “He’s got big ambitions to try and have a glass of red with me down the line and destroy my trophy cabinet, and I’ll be very, very happy if that happens, let me tell you.”

Oscar Piastri has already opened his F1 scorebook with an 8th place finish at his home race. But the 22-tear-old still has some massive expectations to live up to as fans only want the best from the former F2 as well as F3 Champion. Now, it remains to be seen if Piastri manages to fulfil those expectations, or if he crumbles underneath them.
