“Better at losing,” Mercedes’ Technical Director gives unusual opinion about 7-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton

To say that Lewis Hamilton had one of his worst seasons in his F1 career in 2022, would be an understatement. The 7-time World Championship, who has more than earned his living legend status in Formula 1 because of his hundreds of racing records, could not get a single Grand Prix victory throughout last season. And thus, Lewis Hamilton ended his first-ever winless campaign since joining F1, and commented that it was something that he simply wanted to forget and move on.

But while speaking to BBC for a recent interview, Mercedes’ Technical Director Andrew Shovlin said that Lewis Hamilton is the last person who would forget his mistakes and move on. Instead, the Briton is known amongst his team members for his immense grit and determination, and Shovlin was sure that Lewis would be examining each point where he went wrong in the last season, and he will try to improve on his past mistakes for a better result in the upcoming 2023 F1 Championship.

Lewis Hamilton is a champion by nature, but he is equally sporting about accepting loss whenever he fails to measure up to his rivals during the races. Speaking on Lewis’ way of taking his losses and turning them into wins, Andrew Shovlin said, “He’s actually better at losing than most I’ve seen because of how diligently he goes through the block of work of understanding what he needs to be better, where did he miss the opportunities. He doesn’t enjoy it, but it’s about the result at the next race, not whether he’s smiling or giving a nice interview.”

Now, Lewis’ 2022 campaign in Formula 1 was peppered with losses here and there. And thus, the Briton must examine all those flaws to deliver a career-best performance in the upcoming 2023 Championship so that he can finally break Michael Schumacher’s record of 7 World title wins by taking home an eighth one. Only time will tell if Hamilton will succeed in this quest at the end of the next season.
