Breaking: Red Bull decide to pay homage to late Dietrich Mateschitz by moving ahead with new wind tunnel development

A huge chasm has been left in the field of motorsports because of the sudden demise of Red Bull Racing owner Dietrich Mateschitz. Even though this current year in Formula One has been one of the most successful ones for the Milton-Keynes-based team since 2013, the sad news of Didi’s death has dampened the spirits of many at the Red Bull garage. And now, the team has decided to honor Dietrich Mateschitz’s last wish by proceeding with the development of a new wind tunnel for their racecars.
Investing in windtunnels will cost Red Bull quite a large sum, especially because they have not headed this way since the team commissioned the old Arrows wind tunnel after acquiring Jaguar in 2004. The wind tunnel in question is, what Horner calls “a Cold War heritage”, as it was first used in 1946 by RAE Bedford.

While the decision about development of the new wind tunnel has been confirmed, itis still not known when the order will fall into place, and the project will start.

Christian Horner confirms Red Bull’s new wind tunnel will be more suited to the changing regulations

While speaking about how they came to the decision to build the new wind tunnel as per Dietrich Mateschitz’s wishes, Christian Horner said, ”Once the tunnel regulations were introduced, then the efficiency of our tunnel just wasn’t comparable with where the regulations are going. It forced our hand that we needed to make that big capital investment. So, that’s what we’ve chosen to do.”
Red Bull have been extensively experimenting with newer car parts in the recent years, and it has yielded them great results as the team won its first Constructors’ Championship in this season since 2013. Only a few months ago, it was confirmed that they would also be building their own engine after the deal with Porsche fell apart since the British team felt that their DNA was getting lost in the engines that Porsche would have manufactured. But now, there has been some reports that Honda might be interested in making the engines for Red Bull once more after the team’s recent success.
