The drama from 2021 is still percolating into the smallest of conversations in the Formula 1 world. The massive showdown between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton is something that none of the fans have forgotten even though it was almost a year and a half back. It all started when seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who was targeting a record-breaking eighth win in 2021 was met with some brilliant performances by Max Verstappen, the Red Bull superstar who dared to challenge Hamilton. Their competition went back-and-forth throughout the season and it all boiled down to one big clash at the very last Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.
During the grand finale of the season, Lewis Hamilton was leading the pack at one point but Nicholas Latifi played a key role. He had an accident due to which the yellow flag was brought up and the safety car was deployed. According to the direction given by the then F1 Race Director Michael Masi, the lapped cars were given the permission to unlap themselves during the last lap with the safety car, and this proved to be a big problem for Lewis Hamilton. Max, using the chaos as an opportunity, surpassed his opponent and got the lead of the race and maintained it till the end.
Even now, many of the personnel attached to Formula 1 believe Masi’s decision to let the lapped cars unlap themselves was uncalled for. They have even argued that Lewis Hamilton was robbed of his rightful Championship win because of that one decision. Masi, faced with huge controversies, had to step down from his post as the Race Director since he was relieved of his duties. But Max remained the 2021 World Champion, even when it was discovered Red Bull had gone slightly above the specified budget that year. And now, David Coulthard is saying what he would have done about the missed World title win if he were in Hamilton’s shoes.

At the Red Bull Showrun event, where he was addressing the media, David Coulthard was suddenly thrown the question of what he would have done if he were in Lewis Hamilton’s place and he lost the eighth World Championship to Max Verstappen because of Michael Masi’s poorly thought-out decision. Then, David Coulthard said, “I would still be complaining, and would have gone to the European Court of Appeal.” Now, this is sparking some controversies since Coulthard is a consultant for Red Bull and this seemed like he was taking Mercedes racer Hamilton’s side.
Here is what the fans have said about Coulthard’s comment–
On the other hand, David Coulthard has said in another interview only a few days ago that Daniel Ricciardo’s appointment at Red Bull is a massive warning to Sergio Perez. The Mexican needs to step on the performance paddle and give some great results to retain his position in the team that is currently reigning at the top in the F1 rankings.
