Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc haven’t had the best of luck when it has come to the car and the team decisions when it comes to their performances in 2023. It’s been a tough year for Ferrari so far. After their failed attempt to challenge for the crown in 2022, the team seems to have fallen even more behind this season. However, while their F1 division has been struggling, Ferrari’s endurance racing division had everyone in stitches.
Ferrari hadn’t competed in the highest category of endurance racing for 50 years. However, the team came back to LeMans as the Scuderia joined the hypercar division. Charles Leclerc was present at the Circuit de la Sarthe to support the team. In an interesting turn of events, after the 24 hours of some gruelling racing , Ferrari got its first LeMans victory in almost 58 years.
The #51 Ferrari as a team of drivers claimed the victory. The team also had former F1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi who attained unimaginable glory. Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc had clearly been motivated. It used to be normal for F1 drivers to compete in other categories in the past in the midst of a season. However, things have changed since then and the Ferrari driver explains as to why that is the case.
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc want to compete in LeMans
Speaking to Viaplay in Canada, here is what Carlos Sainz had to say. “It was an incredible feat by the team. We are all very proud of what we achieved [winning the 24 hours of Le Mans]. We were talking about it, actually, whether we could race together in Le Mans – with Charles,” he said. “I would do it. It’s just the calendar of F1 nowadays doesn’t allow much flexibility,” he continued.
When it comes to the current Formula 1 grid, Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg are the only drivers who have won LeMans. Many others on the grid such as Max Verstappen have expressed their interest to race in LeMans. With Ferrari’s recent triumph in LeMans, the urge from their F1 pilots to compete has just increased ten fold. It will be interesting to see whether the Scuderia can make something happen for their drivers.
