F1 Australian GP- WATCH: ” Most Useless and stupid red flag” Turn one carnage ensues on bonkers second safety car restart at Melbourne

The Lap 56 restart of the Australian GP

The Australian GP was full of action. The race was action-packed for the first 56 laps. However, the fans were not ready for what was to come at the race’s second restart. Max Verstappen led Lewis Hamilton into turn 1. Fernando Alonso tried to go down the inside, but the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz made contact with the Aston Martin. This took away the podium of the 41-year-old.

This was not all, the carnage continued. The Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon collided, forcing both cars out of the race. A nightmare for the French team. During this crash, Lance Stroll narrowly avoided the two Alpine cars but ended up driving into the gravel and losing out on points. Logan Sargeant crashed into Nyck de Vries in the Alpha Tauri, ending the races for both cars at the Australian GP.

This was a disaster, with 6 drivers being out of the race. However, a few drivers got bumped up way higher in the order. Carlos Sainz took up the third spot after the crash of his fellow countryman. Nico Hulkenberg managed to avoid the chaos and stood to P4 after this restart. Yuki Tsunoda followed the Haas driver closely in P5, with the two McLarens and two Alfa Romeos taking up the next spots, respectively. Sergio Perez rounded up the top 10. However, the running order was changed shortly after.

Twitter was shocked over the on-track action. One user questioned the need for the restart after the red flag on Lap 56. As drivers unsurprisingly went all in for the 2 lap sprint. The fan said, “The most stupid and useless red flag in the history of F1.” Another fan quickly pointed out that it was one of the biggest disasters in the history of F1 let alone the Australian GP. The user commented, “This one will go down in history.”

On the other hand, one fan took a rather controversial stance. The fan claimed that former Race Director Michael Masi could’ve solved this crisis better. They said, “Micheal Masi would’ve handled this situation way better!” While one user brought up the famous words of Sebastian Vettel from the German’s Ferrari days. The user asked, “What are we doing racing or ping pong?”

Thus, no one had expected such a chaotic end to the Australian GP. The second restart, two laps before the race, ended in a disaster for most cars on the grid. However, the racing order was changed before the end of the race as the FIA switched back to the running order before this restart. As such, this was a rather costly affair for most teams on the grid, with virtually no winners.
