Christian Horner and Adrian Newey are one of the most important figures at Red Bull along with team advisor with Dr Helmut Marko being the third. It is difficult to imagine how the team would have performed if they wouldn’t have gotten Adrian on board. As big a task it was, the team managed to convince him to leave McLaren and the rest is history.

Before joining Red Bull Racing, Adrian Newey was already one of the most sought after personnel in the F1 paddock. Having worked with Williams and McLaren before, the Aero Maestro had helped those teams rack up multiple world championships with his famous car designs. Christian Horner and Red Bull had been following Newey’s career extensively and it was clear that he was the man that the team needed on their side.

Christian Horner and Dr Helmut Marko then approached the F1 legend and somehow convinced him to leave his post at McLaren and join the team as their Technical Director. Adrian was hesitant at first but later accepted the challenge. After a few years of struggling, things finally started getting better and Red Bull finally became a worthy challenger for all the top teams. It was clear that they weren’t here just to party.

During the Talking Bull Podcast, here is what the Red Bull team boss had to say. “What was missing was a clear technical direction. I’d always been a fan of Adrian and his cars going way back to Leyton House times in the late 1980s! And Adrian was the very best that’s ever been in Formula 1, so it was a question of how could we entice, how could we entice Adrian to join the Red Bull team,” he stated.

Red Bull enjoyed a 4 year period of success with Sebastian Vettel acquiring 8 world championships in that stint. After a dry spell for a few years, the team won the drivers title again in 2021 with Max Verstappen and both the titles in 2022. Adrian Newey has a massive role to play in the team’s success and it’s all thanks to Horner’s efforts in bringing him to the team.
