The biggest controversy that has been going around in the Formula 1 world right now started a few days ago with one of Red Bull supremo Christian Horner‘s interviews. The Briton made a claim that Lewis Hamilton had texted him earlier in 2023 to talk about a possibility of the Mercedes man shifting to Red Bull. This seemed shocking in several respects since Lewis Hamilton has been a Silver Arrows racer for over a decade now and it made no sense that he would move to another squad just at 38 for his Championship dreams.
And what made Horner’s claim sound even more insane is the fact that should Lewis become a Red Bull driver, he would be paired with their star recruit Max Verstappen. And the two of them have had a rivalry that has been roiling since their epic F1 Championship title battle in 2021. When Lewis Hamilton was asked to comment on whether he had indeed texted to seek a spot at Red Bull, he brushed off the allegations completely. On the other hand, Helmut Marko confirmed Horner’s words and even revealed that Lewis has proposed a term to get Red Bull to provide him with the same machinery as Max.
Since Christian Horner‘s one statement set off a chain reaction in the F1 world, he was asked to comment on it one more time at the Abu Dhabi Team Principal’s conference. And there, he changed his tone completely in a last ditch attempt to bury the hachet.
We haven’t had any serious discussion with Lewis, there was never a seat available. Inevitably, when drivers go through tough spots – let’s face it, Lewis hasn’t won a Grand Prix two years – questions will be asked up and down the paddock. There was never any engagement.Christian Horner said, as reported by Formula1.com.
Christian Horner is amazed his words on Lewis Hamilton have gained such ‘remarkable traction’
When Christian Horner made the comment about Lewis Hamilton, the Red Bull Boss never thought it would blow out of proportions. But still, his words were incendiary enough that the entire F1 community started discussing it. Speaking about how the entire topic of Lewis Hamilton approaching Horner for a seat at Red Bull became so widely circulated within the F1 world, the Briton used the term ‘remarkable’.

It’s remarkable how much traction this has got. It’s a question of he said, she said, who said, what said. It’s entirely normal for drivers, drivers’ representatives, drivers’ parents to have different conversations during the course of a year.
In other news, Max Verstappen has claimed that it does not even matter if Horner’s claim about Lewis Hamilton’s Red Bull proposal is true since ‘it is not happening’. The Dutch driver also tackled the question of where his and Lewis’ rivalry would stand and who would beat whom if they had similar machinery. He boldly responded that he does not have to prove anything about his racing skills.
