Damon Hill calls out Karun Chandhok over biased commentary against Lewis Hamilton

Damon Hill is the 1996 Formula 1 world champion. Son of two-time world champion Graham Hill, the Brit was seen as one of the few who could challenge young Michael Schumacher. Despite winning his one and only title with Williams, Hill was replaced for the following season. This led to Hill driving in less competitive machinery for Arrows and Jordan. Damon retired after the end of 1999 and was the first Grand Prix winner for the Jordon team.

Karun Chandhok is an ex-F1 driver turned presenter. He was the second Indian to ever race in Formula 1 after making his debut in 2010 with Hispania Racing Team. Due to a variety of reasons the Indian has only had 11 starts in the sport, including his short-lived stint at Team Lotus. Following his exit from F1, the 38-year-old raced in other categories such as the Le Mans 24 hours and Formula E. Karun is currently part of the Sky Sports F1 coverage.

Formula 1 commentary is always alleged to be biased. Few renowned presenters are often believed to be biased towards a specific driver due to his nationality or otherwise. Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s boycott of Sky Sports was done due to the alleged disrespect towards the Dutchman by Ted Kravitz, who is argued to be biased towards Lewis Hamilton who is British. Similar accusations are also placed on Dutch and German broadcasts, which are said to be in favor of drivers of their own countries.

Damon Hill points out Chandhok’s pattern of bias in F1

Damon Hill has shown his support for Lewis Hamilton in the past

During the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, Karun Chandhok said on Sky’s coverage that it was “not fun” to watch Lewis Hamilton‘s dominant drive at Interlagos last year due to the car being “too fast.” A fan pointed out this instance on Twitter and alleged Karun’s favoritism towards Max Verstappen as the Indian driver has praised the Dutchman’s drives this year but seems to be critical of Hamilton’s performance last year without any regard for the more difficulty in overtaking in 2021.

The Indian driver replied to this tweet and called it an “Example of someone creating negativity for NO reason with ZERO context of what I said.” The 38-year-old referred to the instance as an explanation for DRS which “seemed too powerful” in 2021. He further clarified, “I only used Lewis as an example as he did the most passing.” This got former world champion Damon Hill to take part in this conversation with the Brit replying, “Yeah? We know your game Karun. Always trying to explain physics to the uneducatable.”

Hill called out the Indian driver for giving an excuse about teaching physics to the viewers without actually implying physics in the context. The Brit mentioned this bias from Karun as something recurring against the 7-time world champion. Damon made his displeasure known not only to the Sky presenter but also to the fans as the Brit has often expressed his fondness for Hamilton. This will put Chandhok at unease as he got publicly called out for his bias. It would be interesting to see how Karun reacts to this reply.
