“Didn’t get the balance like we hoped for”: Max Verstappen dissects Red Bull’s pace during the free practice at Circuit Paul Ricard
Max Verstappen
As the lights went out in the Circuit de Paul Ricard on Friday for the second free practice session for the much-awaited French Grand Prix 2022, Ferrari made their mark by displaying some enviable performances on the racetrack. The Scuderia had their Spanish recruit, Carlos Sainz, soar to the top of the charts with his brilliant pace. Carlos was followed by teammate Charles Leclerc, who is still reveling his victory in the Austrian Grand Prix in Red Bull’s backyard a couple of weeks ago.
Quite surprisingly, Red Bull could not perform as they were expected to during the FP2 session. After two back-to-back misses at the top spot in the grid in Britain and in Austria, Red Bull are expected to make some splash in the French Grand Prix and take home the race win for Max Verstappen, but their pace during FP2 said otherwise. Max was more than 0.5s off the pace, and his teammate Sergio Perez was a second behind him, as the Spaniard slotted into the tenth spot.

Max Verstappen explains the reason why Red Bull was off the pace in French Grand Prix FP2
While the two Ferraris put up a formidable performance during FP2, fans demanded answers as to why Max Verstappen was so shockingly slow on the pace in Circuit Paul Ricard. Reacting to his FP2 run, Max Verstappen had some things to say about his RB-18’s pace for the weekend. He said, “I think FP2 was a bit more difficult for us. Just didn’t get the balance like we hoped for, but we are also trying things with the car. We will have a look at it all for tomorrow and try to be closer then we are today.”
Verstappen also said, “Overall, this track is hard on the tires, and you can’t compare it to Austria. We need a bit more laps to really have a good look at the long run.”
