“Either we keep what we have or we find some sort of compromise”: Guenther Steiner blasts the FIA for restricting flexi floor usage to control porpoising

One of the most controversial technical issue that has come up in this season of Formula 1 involves the porpoising problems that have been plaguing the racers of many of the teams ever since the first race of F1 2022 in Bahrain. One of the teams that have been the most vocal about removing porpoising is Mercedes, and after repeated protests and appeals, the FIA decided to intervene in this issue and give out a technical directive that would help Mercedes tackle their porpoising problems. But many of the other teams have not been happy with such a biased decision from the FIA as they feel that Mercedes should have suffered the loss as they could not crack the solution for all their porpoising woes.

The porpoising occurs in the cars which have a lot of downforce, and it causes the cars to bounce on their own axes, thus causing a lot of troubles for the drivers sitting inside the cockpit. According to the new rules issued by the FIA, the authoritative committee will be strict towards the usage of the flexi floor technology by many of the teams. This flexi floor technology can cause the floor to flex, so that the airflow gets sealed under the car, so that there is much more ground effect.

Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner is now happy about the fact that the FIA does not want the teams to maneuver the flexi-floor technology to benefit them when it comes to tackling the porpoising problems in their cars. According to Steiner, the designing of the 2023 cars for the upcoming season of F1 is already underway and such a decision from the FIA would force all the teams to start the designing from scratch once again, and that is not possible.

Some of the teams have already challenged the FIA’s decision regarding porpoising, and Haas have extended their support to those teams. Guenther Steiner has spoken up in this matter, saying, “We are with the four teams. We don’t want to start off fresh developing the 2023 cars. Either we keep what we have or we find some sort of compromise.”
