McLaren's Boss, Andreas Seidl
In the Austrian Grand Prix of last week, McLaren racer Lando Norris got a penalty for exceeding track limits as the stewards were stringent with the measures to make sure any crash could be avoided. In total, forty three lap times were deleted for the racers who participated in the Spielberg race, and many of them even got time penalties for exceeding track limits multiple times. Even though Lando Norris finish seventh in the race, the Briton got a time penalty of five seconds.
While Lando Norris was not happy with the penalty, Andreas Seidl, the team executive of McLaren Racing, said that he was happy that the stewards had taken such strict action against trackside violations. In a recent interview, Seidl has clarified his stance on Lando’s penalty, saying that he is happy that the drivers are being penalized for a genuine mistake that cost time and compromise on driver safety.

McLaren Team Boss Andreas Seidl gives his take on driver penalty for trackside violations
Andreas Seidl has always said that the stewards should focus on penalizing racers for “genuine” mistakes during the course of the Grand Prix where they lose time and have a risk of compromising on drivers’ safety. The team executive believes F1 is on the right track after the stewards became stringent with the trackside violations and thus, he claimed that he is happy that the rules are being followed, even though Lando Norris from his own team was penalized for the same.
Speaking on this topic, he said, “In terms of track limits, all teams and drivers were screaming for consistency, or more consistency in the past.”
He further said, “In the end, that is why we ended up with the black and white rules, that you need to stay within track limits at any place on the track, which means you need to stay within the white lines.”
Andreas Seidl concluded, “To be honest, even though we had a penalty, I am quite happy with that because it’s easy to understand for everyone.”
