A fresh Fernando Alonso Aston Martin contract hypothesis has been dubbed “absurd” by former F1 driver Pedro de la Rosa in the wake of the Austrian GP. DAZN F1 pundit Antonio Lobato recently claimed that Alonso might not be permitted to take on Lance Stroll and is being given the second driver treatment.

Alonso’s 2023 career resurrection with Aston Martin has been incredible, with six podium finishes from nine races. This is a far cry from when he took a break from Formula One at the end of his second McLaren stint in 2018. His impressive performance is mainly due to the solid AMR23 that has been filed for him by Aston Martin, which is now reaping the benefits of Lawrence Stroll’s multimillion-dollar investment.

De la Rosa, while talking to Lobato, pointed out that the theory is absurd, and Alonso is playing the team game and is in no way prohibited from taking the fight to his teammate Lance Stroll. He said, “Antonio, that’s absurd. Sorry, it’s absurd. You’ve mentioned that before, and it’s totally absurd. Good teamwork is being done, that’s all.”

The story started spreading in the Motorsport community when Alonso joined Aston Martin. A myth spread that the Spaniard had been hired as the company’s obedient “number two” driver to compete with Lance Stroll. Some incidents involving the on-track fuelled the speculations more.  He decided not to attack Stroll in Spain and failed to overtake the youngster in Austria.

Lance Stroll has to use the Fernando Alonso experience as a learning curve

Fernando Alonso has won multiple podiums already this season, easily outpacing Lance Stroll. This season, Alonso has demonstrated that the Aston Martin AMR23 he drives is the second-best vehicle on the F1 grid, trailing only the dominant Red Bull RB19. While Stroll is the least effective Aston Martin driver, he will make his 132nd F1 start on Sunday when he starts the British Grand Prix.

The Aston Martin driver has been mercilessly exposed by his colleague. Still, it will be another learning curve for the Canadian as he aspires to become a strong driver with race-winning qualities.  He has the opportunity to prove once again, like he did last year with Sebastian Vettel, that on a good day, he can be a strong performer and has what it takes to be at F1.

Because of their different ages and Fernando’s current level of maturity, they will complement each other’s growth as teammates and work well together. The veteran should not take it easy on his teammate if he makes any compromises on the track to make Stroll look good, and it will tarnish his, Stroll’s, and the team’s legacy,
