F1 Academy copies Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’, announces new docuseries with Reese Witherspoon-backed production house
An all-new docuseries is all set to start production under the wing of Reese Witherspoon-owned Hello Sunshine Productions.
First came the massive success of the hit Netflix docuseries on Formula 1–Drive to Survive, then came the overwhelming hype over Lewis Hamilton‘s yet-to-release movie on F1 with Brad Pitt, and now there is another F1 production in the works as per the news reports. Since the last few years, Formula 1 has tried hard to make this sport more inclusive by recognising racers from difference backgrounds, origins, and races. And with a special focus on promoting women racers, the Formula W Series was started.
Unfortunately, the financial side of things weighed down upon the W Series, and after running for three seasons in 2020, ’21, and ’22, the series was shelved for indefinite time. Even though there was some news about the W Series making a comeback in 2023, it seems highly unlikely as of now. And in the middle of the mess surrounding the W Series, Formula One announced a new initiative called the ‘F1 Academy’. It is an all-female single-seater racing Championship that had its debut this year.
With Susie Wolff acting as the Managing Director for the series and 15 drivers aiming for the Championship, the F1 Academy has been quite successful in its running. And now, there is more news surrounding it as the production company Happy Sunshine have purchased the rights to release a docuseries on the all-female racing league. If this production on the F1 Academy achieves even half the success that Netflix’s Drive to Survive did, then it will be a massive step in publicizing women’s participation in motorsports.
Academy Award-winning Reese Witherspoon will produce the F1 Academy docuseries
Reese Witherspoon’s production house ‘Hello Sunshine’ has agreed to make the docuseries focusing on the lives of the 15 female drivers who currently contest in the F1 Academy races. Fans will also get a never-seen-before access to what goes on behind-the-scenes at the F1 Academy.
Speaking on this production, Susie Wolff has said, “F1 Academy is going to drive change in the motorsport industry as we create the best possible structure to find and nurture female talent both on and off the racetrack. We want to inspire women around the world to follow their dreams, and by partnering with Hello Sunshine, who are leaders in telling inspirational female stories, we will reach a global audience and empower the next generation of young women to break down barriers in motorsport and beyond.”
As of now, the date of release of the docuseries on F1 Academy has not yet been finalized. But fans will be eagerly waiting to hear more about their favorite female racers as they break the barriers in their fields and move forward to achieve their goals in Formula 1.
