The first-ever sprint shootout at the Azerbaijan GP got off to an electrifying start as drivers hit the track. They were eager to get their out laps underway on fresh sets of medium tires, as per the rules. However, Willams’ Logan Sargeant‘s promising first ever was cut short when he crashed out of the session. The American rookie locked up his front tires and hit the barriers into turn 15.
Logan Sargeant initially showed good caliber, making good use of Williams’ straight-line speed. He managed to reach SQ2 alongside Alex Albon. However, the American driver’s hopes of progressing further were dashed when he crashed out of the session, forcing him to start in tenth place for the evening’s sprint race.
The American driver had Ferrari cars that wheeled off his racing line. Sargeant seem to have been distracted by them and clipped the wall into the turn 15. The rookie is thankfully okay, but he blamed the Ferrari cars for his mistake. He said over his radio, “Man the Ferraris were in the middle of the road!”
F1 Twitter once again draws a comparison mocking Williams and the new F1 sprint format
The red flag was immediately waved when Logan Sargeant crashed out of the first-ever sprint shootout with only 43 seconds left on the clock, suspending the session. Alpha Tauri’s Yuki Tsunoda was on a better lap but had to back off just before the finish line due to the red flag. It prevented him from making it into the next session, SQ2.
The incident caused a stir on Twitter, with some fans blaming Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz for the incident, while others mocked Logan Sargeant by comparing him to his predecessor Nicholas Latifi for his mistake. Some expressed their concerns about the new sprint format. The fans feel it adds to the pressure on the teams to fix broken cars in time for the sprint race.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the garage, the Alpine mechanics were already hard at work as they found a hydraulic leak in Pierre Gasly’s car. It caused him to bow out of the session with just one run. The high stakes and unpredictability of the sprint weekend have made for an exciting start to the event. The fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming sprint race. The American rookie will have to make up for his mistake in the sprint shootout.
