‘Pretends to be shocked’ F1 Twitter reacts as Williams finally confirm Logan Sargeant as driver for 2023

After Logan Sargeant had secured the FIA superlicense points required to race in Formula 1 with his P4 finish in Formula 2, it was only a matter of time before the announcement came. Williams had already outlined their intention to put him in the seat, and now it has been confirmed, a day after the end of the Formula 1 and Formula 2 seasons.
There was definitely massive pressure on the American driver to deliver his best and secure his F1 seat (especially as Williams had basically announced it), but now while he’s past that, the fact that he’s now an F1 driver is still sinking in. In his interview with the team, Sargeant said: “In all honesty, it’s all sinking in. It was a long and hard weekend, I felt like I had the pressure of 15 years of hard work.”
Sargeant did not want his opportunity to get into Formula 1 to ‘slip’ through his fingers: “Blood, sweat and tears coming into it. I just didn’t want to let it slip, you know, these opportunities always come around once in a lifetime, and I have to give massive credit to Williams and Carlin for giving me such an amazing opportunity, and supporting me every step of the way.”
On being asked to give his message to the fans, Sargeant said: “Obviously, I’m gonna do my absolute best. I’m gonna try and make you all proud, and make the Williams name proud as well. Just to know, I won’t leave any stone unturned – you’ll get my absolute best at every race.”

Fans react to the Logan Sargeant announcement
The fact that he will drive for Williams was a well-known fact by the time of the announcement, so it surprised barely anyone. Of course, until yesterday’s feature sprint race, he was yet to seal it, but it would’ve taken quite the disaster that would’ve led him to not seal it – all he had to was finish 8th in F2. He was 3rd going into the weekend, and while he was pipped by Liam Lawson by a point, it doesn’t matter now.
Sargeant will be the first American driver on the grid since Alexander Rossi back at the 2015 Brazilian Grand Prix. Now, with three technically ‘home races’ for him on the calendar next year, the crowd will have someone they can call their ‘own’ and get behind. It’s exciting times to be an American F1 fan.
Logan Sargeant’s surname is ‘quite similar’ to sounding like ‘Sergeant’ – a rank in the military of many countries. It’s one above a corporal, and one below a ‘staff sergeant’. One fan used this as a basis for a pun.
Now comes the hard part. Sargeant will participate in the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi before he finally gets to work with Williams. The team gave him four practice sessions – also to help him in attaining the superlicense, but these would also have helped him acclimatise to a Formula 1 car, which should provide him a boost as he gets started for 2023.
