Ford Motor Company is making a return to Formula 1. Ford has joined hands with Red Bull Racing for the Austrian team’s in-house Power Unit project. The US automaker will partner up with Red Bull from the 2026 F1 season. This marks the return of the American marquee after almost two decades. The last time, it raced at the pinnacle of motorsport was under the name of the Jaguar F1 team in 2004.

Despite being away from F1 for so long, Ford remains one of the most successful engine suppliers in the sport. The American automaker has won a grand total of 176 races over its history, just behind Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes. Subsequently, The US giant stands at joint second place for most F1 championships for an engine manufacturer. Ford has won 13 world championships, the same number as Mercedes. Again, Ferrari tops this list with 15 titles.

However, these wins aren’t directly of Ford Motor Company. This grand success in F1 was achieved by Cosworth-built engines. Interestingly, Ford financed the F1 projects of Cosworth for years and subsequently earned its name on the records. The Cosworth DFV engine stands out as the most renowned F1 engine made under this endeavor. Although moving forward, things will change as we see the Ford-Red Bull collaboration.

Thus, fans seem divided over Ford’s achievement in Formula 1. Of course, the US automaker may have brought in the cash for the engine projects. But at the end of the day, it was the talent at Cosworth that made it happen. However, of course, money matters the most and thus, the American giant gets to boast about a stellar record in Formula 1 before its comeback with Red Bull in 2026.
