Formula 1 announced the F1 academy late last year. The all-female racing series is a way of providing a pathway for talented female drivers to the sport. The series will take place on some Grand Prix weekends this season as it unveiled an exciting calendar. The series will include 21 races with 15 drivers competing through 5 teams. Recently, the sport finally declared the person who will be running the show, as a former racing driver, Susie Wolff gets appointed as Managing Director.
Wolff has immense experience in motorsport. The 40-year-old raced in the German DTM series and previously held a development driver role at the Williams F1 team. This allowed the British driver to take part in a few FP1 sessions. Additionally, Wolff has the expertise of leading the Venturi Formula E team in the all-electric racing series. Coincidentally, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff is the husband of the new F1 Academy Managing Director.
Susie has tried to establish more opportunities for women in the male-dominated motorsport arena. The 40-year-old started the campaign, ‘Dare to be Different.’ in 2016 as a way to promote more female participation in racing. The former British driver mentioned her faith in the F1 academy. Susie Wolff stated, “There is a lot of work to be done but there is also a clear determination to get this right. In doing so, I believe the F1 Academy can represent something beyond racing.”
Further, Susie tweeted her views on her new role at F1 academy. She wrote, “This is an opportunity to promote genuine change in our industry by creating the best possible structure to find and nurture female talent on their journey to the elite levels of motorsport, on and off track” Certainly, the 40-year-old is prepared for her responsibilities in changing the landscape for female racing drivers.

“Fantastic appointment” – Fans thrilled to see Susis Wolff leading the F1 academy
After this news was posted on Twitter, fans appreciated this decision. One user described this appointment in depth as to why Susie Wolff is the ideal candidate to lead the all-female series. The user wrote, “Fantastic appointment. No other name would have done more justice to this position. She has the perfect skill set, exposure and sensitivity to perform as MD here. Go girls!” Similarly, another fan commented, “Wow that’s fantastic! Well done to her.”
Another user mentioned how Susie Wolff and her husband both are excelling in motorsport. The fan replied, “the wolff pack is taking over.” On the other hand, one fan questioned this decision to be in conflict of interest for F1 as Susie is married to an F1 Team Principal. The fan asked, “Surely this is a conflict of interest with her relationship with Toto?”
Susie Wolff is certainly the right person for this job. The 40-year-old knows the ins and outs of motorsport on a personal level. This, in turn, would allow Wolff to truly understand the needs of the drivers in the series. The former Venturi Team boss will be best suited to take the F1 academy to great heights as she works hand-in-hand with the stakeholders in promoting the participation of women in the world of motorsport.
