Sergio Perez is often considered a master of street circuits in Formula 1. High expectations were laid on the Mexican driver to get a decent result at the Monaco GP this season, a race he won last year. However, things turned into a disaster for the 33-year-old right in the first part of Qualifying. Checo failed to keep control of the car and crashed into the wall at Turn 1.

Perez had just started a fast lap in Q1 when the Mexican driver headed into the first corner. Unfortunately, the 33-year-old went in a bit too fast and was forced to try and gain control of his RB-19. Checo lost control as the rear of the car slid completely and made contact with the barriers. Williams’ Alex Albon had a similar crash earlier this weekend.

The Mexican driver was unhappy after the car’s side pods incurred massive damage. The entire paddock could then see the intricate details of the Adrian Newey-designed RB-19 floor after the marshalls lifted the car up to remove it from the track. The Red Bull garage will have a lot of work to do overnight to prepare the car for tomorrow’s race when Perez starts from the back of the field.

Fans on Twitter quickly reacted to Perez’s crash. Many speculated if it was sabotage done by Red Bull in a bid to have Max Verstappen get Pole position. One user wrote, “Verstappen paid him”. While another fan said, “Free win Verstappen incoming”. While fans were confident that rivals including Mercedes Chief Toto Wolff would be delighted to see the floor of the RB-19. One fan replied, “Toto is running to every photographer to get a look at the underfloor”.

On the other hand, many mocked Sergio Perez for his performance despite being considered the King of street circuits. One user commented, “Classic King of the Streets”. While another fan stated, “Perez giving back to everyone, letting them see their floor”. One fan joked about the RB-19 being lifted in the air and wrote, “Red Bull gives you wings”.

Thus, Sergio Perez will start the 2023 Monaco GP right from last place. The 33-year-old was hopeful of securing a decent result at this track despite it being ill-suited to the RB-19. Unfortunately, the Mexican driver will have a long race on Sunday. Checo will have to try and make his way up the grid on a track where overtaking is far from easy.
