“Felicidades!”: Spanish racer Carlos Sainz let’s go of sentiments for his own country to congratulate Argentina for their World Cup win

Ferrari racer Carlos Sainz is a Spaniard by birth, and like most of his countrymen, he loves to watch and follow football despite being associated with a different sport altogether. The 28-year-old has time and again claimed that he is a devoted Real Madrid fan and fervently follows the team during their escapades at the La Liga–the Spanish football league. Sainz is such a passionate football fan that only a few days ago, he posted pictures of him watching Spain’s World Cup match with teammate Charles Leclerc, although the poor Monegasque had fallen asleep halfway through the game.

As the Formula 1 circus travels all across the world for the Grands Prix which take place at different locations in various countries, Carlos Sainz has chance encounters with football fans from all those places. Once, he came across a Barcelona devotee who wanted him to give his autograph on a jersey that had Lionel Messi’s name on it as the Argentine footballer used to play in La Liga for that team during the time. But Sainz refused because he wanted to stay true to his favorite team and Barcelona’s biggest nemesis–Real Madrid.

As such a big follower of the world of football, it goes without saying that Carlos Sainz was keeping a close eye on the proceedings of the World Cup even though his own country, Spain, was shown the door during their knockout match with Morocco in what turned out to be one of the biggest upsets of this year. As Argentina finally lifted the trophy as the World Cup winners after a long wait since 1986, Sainz took to his official Instagram page to congratulate the team for their huge feat after beating defending Champions France at a breathtaking finale.

While Carlos Sainz had mentioned that he will support his homeland Spain–the 2010 World Cup winners–in this season of the FIFA league, he proved that he is not a sore loser when Argentina won the title and he congratulated them despite Spain not making it to the finale. Addressing the Argentine team on his Instagram story, he said, “Congratulations, Argentina!! I am very happy for all Argentinians. Congratulations!

While the finale at the FIFA World Cup was a massive affair with twists and turns that lasted till the very end of the match between Argentina and France, this year’s Formula 1 season’s last game at Abu Dhabi was more of an emotional affair than an exciting one. It was already known that Max Verstappen had won the World Championship and Red Bull had clinched the Constructors’ title. And the Abu Dhabi GP was mostly about bidding Sebastian Vettel goodbye as the German raced in F1 for the last time amongst the sands of the middle-eastern country.
