Aston Martin had a brilliant start to the 2023 Formula One season, achieving multiple podiums with lead driver Fernando Alonso, helped by points scored by Lance Stroll. The Silverstone team was right behind Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship for a major part of the season.

However, the form did not last in the second half of the season. Aston Martin’s performance declined dreadfully, and they suffered setbacks in nearly every race. The team dropped back to fifth in the standings by the final round in Abu Dhabi, passed by McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari. Alonso admitted that he had slightly higher expectations of the team, and the result hurt.

Fifth in the Constructors' hurts a little bit because I think we were better than that, and we were hoping to be better than that at the beginning of the year.

Alonso did have some luck in the Drivers’ Championship, finishing a commendable fourth ahead of Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque driver finished with the same points as Alonso, but with more second-place finishes, the 42-year-old claimed fourth.

Lewis Hamilton accused Alonso of brake testing him before the braking zone around 400 meters before. Alonso laughed the remarks off, joking that he has more experience than his former McLaren teammate, dismissing the complaints.

Lewis obviously is very clever, understands the sport really, really good and has a lot of experience, but I have more.

Alonso and Hamilton tussled over P3 in the Championship before Aston Martin’s decline, with the Briton eventually winning the battle, claiming P3 in the end with a 28-point gap to Alonso behind. Aston Martin and Mercedes have both promised improvements in 2024, potentially being a threat to Red Bull.
