Fernando Alonso had his best Formula One season in a decade, helping Aston Martin do the same. The Spaniard managed an incredible eight podiums for the Silverstone-based team in 2023, finishing fourth in the Championship with 206 points to his name. However, even with the numerous podiums, Alonso and Aston Martin finished without a race victory in 2023, narrowly missing out a few times.

The 42-year-old said that the top step of the podium nearly came in Monaco, but the opportunity was taken away by a misled strategic move. Another close call came in the rain-troubled session at Zandvoort. Alonso claimed that Aston Martin deserved victory more than anyone else in a comeback season for them.

Probably Monaco was the closest, with a tyre call change or something. Maybe Zandvoort if we were in a different position in that restart or something. We probably had opportunities [to win] here and there, and yes, I believe that we deserve it more than anyone else this year.

Fernando Alonso is yet to achieve his 33rd win in F1, but after the 2023 season, it has become very evident that he will not stop until he does. Aston Martin themselves have never finished with a race win, even though they have achieved many podiums in their short time in Formula One.

Fernando Alonso compares the 2023 campaign to the 2012 title charge

Alonso put together some extremely good displays of pace and a near-race win in Monaco. The two-time World Champion has achieved fourth place in the Championship behind longtime rival Lewis Hamilton and both Red Bull drivers. Alonso claims the 2023 season is akin to his 2012 title bid, where he finished just a couple of points behind the Champion, calling both seasons his best-ever.

I'm happy with the personal performance. I think together with 2012, it's the best season for me in my driving and I was happy with everything – motivated, I was fit, I was performing in difficult conditions sometimes.
Alonso said, as reported by motorsport.com

Alonso is confident of future success as the Aston Martin driver extends his record of being the oldest current driver as well as having the longest F1 career of all time. A race victory has eluded the Asturian driver since the 2013 season, his latest victory being his home race in Spain at the Circuit de Catalunya.
