Fernando Alonso, the former 2-time F1 world champion, had a great outing during the 2023 Abu Dhabi GP. Alonso managed a brilliant seventh-place finish but despite this, he has come under a bit of a controversy after Lewis Hamilton claimed that he brake-tested dim during the 58-lap race.

During the Abu Dhabi GP, Fernando Alonso was rejoining the track and had Lewis Hamilton right behind him. The former moved to the right-hand side on the approach to Turn 5 and then appeared to lift off the throttle. This took Hamilton by surprise and he complained on the team radio indicating that Alonso brake-tested him.

The stewards decided to take no action on the incident and Alonso while talking to Motorsport.com at the end of the race, said;

Lewis is obviously very clever and understands the sport really good and has a lot of experience but I have more.

Moreover, when asked about whether Hamilton’s comment surprised him, he added, “Yes and no.” Looking at the reaction of the Aston Martin driver, it is quite clear that he does not see his incident with the 38-year-old as anything major. The duo during the 58-lap Abu Dhabi GP came close a couple of times, but at the event, Hamilton was only able to manage a ninth-place finish in comparison to Alonso’s seventh.

Fernando Alonso has ended the 2023 campaign in 4th place in the standings

While Fernando Alonso has pretty much played down his Abu Dhabi GP incident with Lewis Hamilton, the duo has done a brilliant job this year for their respective teams. The former has managed a fourth-place finish in the Drivers Championship whereas Hamilton ended up third.

From Alonso’s perspective, he could not have asked for a better end to his 2023 campaign. During his Alpine days, he was fighting to end the season in the Top 10, but since moving to Aston Martin, his fortunes have changed completely. This year, the Spaniard scored an impressive 206 points and also managed to finish on the podium eight times.

All in all, Fernando Alonso has had a great run in 2023 and would look to do even better during the 2024 Formula 1 season. Next up on Alonso’s wishlist would be to score a win next year and ideally, have the car to take the fight to Max Verstappen and company.
