The news of Lewis Hamilton leaving Mercedes to join Ferrari had created waves in the F1 world. Now his ex-teammate Fernando Alonso has reacted. The Spaniard was late to the furor and believed that his old rival might have a capable car to fight for the championship with the Scuderia.
As Hamilton will be moving to the Maranello-based squad, he is anticipated to aim for the elusive eighth title in red. The Briton has even claimed that his childhood dream to drive for the team has come true. Alonso had a stint with the Italian outfit himself previously where he came close to winning the title but was pipped by Sebastian Vettel. The two-time world champion wished the Briton good luck ahead of his transfer to the Scuderia. The Spaniard reckoned that Hamilton can excel with his new team.
Maybe Lewis[Hamilton] can bring that extra to fight for the championship because the car is there. At the end of last year, even with a very dominant Red Bull car, Ferrari [was] still able to match the lap time and to be faster than them in most of the qualifying. Ferrari has always been at the top of the sport since its inception. The Italian team has amazing facilities across the various divisions. Subsequently, fans expect the Scuderia to perform better and potentially fight for the title. With the seven-time champion joining Ferrari and pairing up with Charles Leclerc, regarded by many as the Golden Boy of the Italian team, a bid for the title seems possible.
How did Ferrari sign Lewis Hamilton?
The Briton is a seven-time world champion and has 103 race wins amassed to his name. Hamilton achieved most of his success with the Silver Arrows. The 39-year-old had an 11-year-long partnership with the team before the announcement of his departure to the Scuderia.
It all became possible when Ferrari’s newly appointed principal Fred Vasseur took the leadership role and brought Ferrari’s President on the table with Hamilton. Hamilton already had a contract with the German manufacturer for the 2025 season. However, the 39-year-old availed an exit clause to join the Italian squad. Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari deal is worth $430 million.
From the 2025 season, Lewis Hamilton could be seen repping up the red outfit. The Briton would join an elite club of drivers who have raced for Ferrari. The 39-year-old would be on a pursuit to end his career with another title, especially with the most successful constructor in the history of F1.
