Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin have enjoyed immense success in the 2023 F1 season. When the Spaniard first announced his decision to join Aston Martin as Sebastian Vettel was leaving, many laughed at him. However, the non-believers were soon proven wrong as the team showed immense progress in 2023. A string of podiums earned by Alonso led to the team giving heavy competition to the top runners.
There have been a few problems when it comes to consistency of results at Aston Martin recently. After finishing P2 in the Dutch GP, there were high expectations for Monza. However, Alonso was only able to achieve a P9 finish. The Spaniard was glad that he finished the race, describing it one of the most difficult races of the year. He was just eight tenths behind Lando Norris.
In an interview, here is what the Spaniard had to say about his tough race. “It was a very demanding race; mentally and physically to drive the car with very low grip which made it very tricky to drive,” he said. “So for me, it was one of the most difficult races of the year and it’s the worst result. It’s going to be an anonymous race, nobody will remember this but I will do in my head because it has been a tough one,” he stated.
Fernando Alonso struggled to match the top speeds of the cars ahead of him
The AMR23 has a lot of drag compared to others which is not at all ideal for a high speed circuit like Monza. Fernando Alonso failed to match the top speeds of the drivers ahead of him and was only able to manage a P9 finish. Meanwhile, his teammate went on to finish even further behind in 16th. Lance was almost a lap down in the ending stages of the race.
Aston Martin leaves Monza with two points in the bag. However, they have now been overtaken in the championship by Ferrari who have slotted into P3 in the constructors. On the other hand, Max Verstappen emerged victorious as he went on to win his 10th consecutive race beating Sebastian Vettel’s longstanding record. It will be interesting to see if Alonso and the team can fight back and take back P3 from the Scuderia.
