Aston Martin was the undisputed best of the best team in the 2023 F1 grid till the Austrian GP. Fernando Alonso, who gave fans hope amidst the massive dominance of Max Verstappen, started the streak of non-podium finishes in Red Bull’s backyard. In the next three races, Spielberg finished position five or worse.

The Two-time world champion has used his mid-season break well and now is determined to get back to the top three. Aston Martin will be introducing new aerodynamic upgrades at Zandvoort to help him in his pursuit. With McLaren and Mercedes making the major jumps, Alonso hopes to extract the maximum from his modified challenger.

During the press conference, Alonso expressed a desire to regain a stronger competitive position in the second half of the season.  He claimed that he was surprised at the team’s strong performance in the initial races of the season and added that they are now very close to getting back to the fight with a strong race at Spa.

It was unexpected to see how competitive we were in the first few races and how we maximized how competitive we were. In the second half of the season, we want to get back to a more competitive position; everything is very close, and we want to be in that fight until the last race,” Alonso, as reported by Soymotor.

Fernando Alonso expresses his positive sentiment about the team’s performance in the first half of the season. He labeled it as a “dream first half,” highlighting Aston Martin’s accomplishments. He added he didn’t envision being in the third position in both the constructors’ championship, ahead of Ferrari, and in the drivers’ championship, alongside Lewis Hamilton

“[It has been] a dream first half of the season. We are P3 in the constructors’ championship in front of Ferrari; we are P3 in the drivers’ championship together with Lewis.  It was impossible to think this way in Bahrain,” Alonso added.

Aston Martin has secured 196 points so far this season and stands at P3, trailing behind Red Bull Racing with 503 points and Mercedes with 247 points. With the latest aerodynamic improvements this weekend, Alonso is hopeful that he can fend off the challenges from McLaren and Mercedes to get back to the front three.
