Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso started his 2023 Formula 1 season in the best way possible. The podium finish at the season opener was a pleasant surprise, and the team was delighted. After seven races, Alonso has five podium finishes. Though this is a positive start to the new season, the Spaniard is hungry for more. Last weekend at the Spanish GP, Alonso finished seventh.
It was not the result he wanted, especially in his home race. Fernando Alonso started the race from ninth place after a disappointing qualifying session. His Aston Martin had floor damage in Q1 as he went off-track. However, Alonso made a decent recovery during the race and finished seventh. He took the chequered flag behind his teammate, Lance Stroll. Alonso warned his rivals, Mercedes and Ferrari, that it was the last race without a podium finish for him.
Alonso was asked if he felt the Aston Martin hype train and the Fernando Alonso hype train slightly ran out of steam during the Spanish GP weekend. The interviewer also asked if it would happen again in the upcoming Canadian GP or if he was ready to load it up. The 41-year-old calmly replied by saying, “It will not happen again. This is the last race without a podium.”
Fernando Alonso warns his rivals of his performance ahead of the Canadian GP
Alonso was not discouraged after his seventh-place finish at his home race. He seemed amped up during the post-race interviews and wanted to focus on the upcoming races. Alonso also stated that Aston Martin would “crush” the competition in the Canadian GP next weekend. It is safe to say that the Spaniard is oozing with confidence which is exactly what his team needs at the moment.
Fernando Alonso is the only driver to have five podiums this season apart from the Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. The Spaniard has been confident, especially after the Monaco GP. It was his best finish of the season as he finished runner-up behind Verstappen after putting up a good fight. Hence, his seventh-place finish the following week at the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona was surprising.
The two-time world champion is still third in the 2023 driver standings. The Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are first and second with 170 and 117 points, respectively. Fernando Alonso has collected 99 points so far. He is ahead of his rival Lewis Hamilton as well. However, as the season progresses, Alonso must maintain his form to retain his position in the driver standings.
