As the oldest and the most successful F1 team in the history of the sport, Ferrari boasts one of the biggest fanbases among all its rivals as well. And for all the supporters of the Scuderia–the Tifosis–the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix or the Imola GP is much more than a simple race. For the die-hard fans whose hearts bleed red for the Ferrari squad, seeing their favorite team in action in their home ground is an emotion. And this is the reason why the Imola GP remains as one of the biggest races on the F1 calendar in any given year.

This time, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was supposed to be the sixth race on the current F1 roster. After the street races in Azerbaijan and in Miami, fans were anticipating some huge action in Ferrari’s backyard as this was going to be the first time that the F1 circuit came to an actual racing track ever since returning to business after the Sprint Break.

Unfortunately, only a week before the race, the weather rapidly worsened in the Emilia Romagna region, and a ‘Red Emergency’ warning was issued so that the local people could take precautions during May 16-17. The F1 authorities were still sticking to their plan of organizing the race till the very last moment, until the situation became more serious and they saw no other way but to cancel the weekend’s proceedings. Issuing a statement on this heartbreak news, Ferrari said, “The team supports the decision to cancel the grand prix. Although it is our home race, the most important, the main priority is the safety of those who live and work in the affected areas.”

For Ferrari, not being able to put up a show at their home Grand Prix is a massive loss, but they supported the decision to cancel the race keeping public safety in mind. Their Team Principal Frederic Vasseur said, “Emilia Romagna is our home and it is heartbreaking to see what people are suffering at this time.” His words were backed by Ferrari racer Carlos Sainz as the Spaniard commented, “We were excited to race in front of the Tifosi but there are a lot of F1 races and everyone’s safety is the most important priority. If we can help, we will.

In other news, the City Mayor of Imola has given the fans some hope of the Emilia Romagna GP returning to the F1 calendar this year, on a much later date. He said that once the weather is back to normal and the conditions of the locals are a bit more stable, the Imola authorities can have a talk with the F1 personnel to see if they can arrange for the Imola GP to be held this year after its cancellation.
